How to Start a Profitable T-Shirt Printing Business From Home in 2024

Starting a t-shirt printing business from home is a great way to be your own boss and turn your creativity into cash. There are a few things you need to consider before you get started, such as your target demographic, printing method, and startup costs. In this article, we'll be going over everything you need to get started printing shirts from home, and making a business out of it.

Start Your Own Brand or Do Custom Work

There are two main ways to sell t-shirts:

  • Start your own brand This involves creating your own designs and selling them on your own website or online marketplace.
  • Do custom work This involves creating t-shirts for other people, based on their designs. This can also be done online and through social media.

Both options can be successful, but they require different marketing strategies.

Choose a Printing Method

There are a few different methods for printing t-shirts at home. The best method for you will depend on your budget, the type of designs you want to create, and the volume of shirts you want to print. All of these methods will require a heat press to apply the transfers to your shirts. These are a few of our recommendations.

  • Best Starter Heat Press: RoyalPress 15"x15" Heat Press $159.00

    • Good for: Hobbyists, users just getting started, low run jobs

    • Not good for: Large runs, large or oversized images.

    • This is a popular choice for beginners because it is relatively inexpensive and easy to use. It has adjustable pressure, but lacks a slide out drawer. Which can help with burning yourself. (Happened to me all the time lol)

  • Best Midrange Heat Press: HeatPress Nation 16" x 20" Signature Series $799.95HPN Signature Series 16

    • Good for: Startups, brands, custom work, large runs, bulk orders.

    • This is a popular choice for our midrange selection because it's a solid workhorse. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get to the set temperature, depending on how hot you need it, and keeps even heat throughout. The slide out drawer helps your hands away from the burning platen, and the auto open will stop any of your prints or garments from burning if you get caught up doing something else.

  • Best Pro-Grade Heat Press: Stahls Hotronix Fusion IQ $2,650.00Stahls' Hotronix Fusion IQ 16
    • Good for: Established brands, corporate use, custom work, large and small runs, different transfer types.

    • This is the ultimate heat press. It's modern with a built in touchscreen LED and extremely efficient with it's adjustable settings. Pressure is no longer controlled by a knob, but by the screen itself. It's easier to keep track of how heavy your pressure settings are and stay consistent when all you have to do is set a number.

  • Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

    • Good for: Simple designs, single colors, custom shirts, solid color designs, one-off (shirts people usually just use once or twice like birthday, gender reveal, event, or others.)

    • Not good for: Full color designs, bulk orders (can take a lot of time), very detailed designs can be difficult to weed (remove excess vinyl).

    • This is a popular choice for beginners because it is relatively inexpensive and easy to use. You can create designs using a cutting machine such as the Silhouette Cameo or Siser Romeo/Juliet and then heat press them onto t-shirts.

  • Sublimation

    • Good for: Full color designs, multiple products (mugs, hats, etc.), wide product range, easy to print and heat press, small learning curve, permanent, ink is infused and bonds with the material so it never fades or cracks.

    • Not good for: Most brands (at least specializing in t-shirts), limited to light color shirts or substrates (mostly polyester shirts)

    • Sublimation is a great option for creating full-color designs on light colored t-shirts. It is a good choice for businesses that want to sell a variety of products, such as mugs, hats, and phone cases.

    • We recommend the Sawgrass SG500 or SG1000 or the Epson SureColor
  • White Toner Printer

    • Good for: Single or full color prints, not restricted to only t-shirts (can print on many things), toner lasts a long time and very cheap to print. Toner is natively waterproof, so most products like mugs will have the design last a long time.
    • Not good for: T-shirt transfers can be expensive and vary in quality, higher startup cost (toner can be expensive upfront).
White toner printers are a great all-in-one option for printing on a variety of substrates, including t-shirts, mugs, and tote bags.
    • We recommend the Uninet iColor 560. You can use our code NEKOPRINTS5OFF when checking out from www.icolorprint.com for 5% off your entire order!
  • Direct to Garment (DTG)

    • Good for: Full color prints and one-offs, POD companies use DTG to print most of their orders. Full color, gradients, shadows, anything is possible. Large runs and enterprises.

    • Not good for: Very high startup cost; you need to make sure you have enough business to justify the cost. Depending on the printer, there can be a lot of maintenance, daily, weekly, and monthly. Repairs can be costly. DTG also requires pre-treatment, which can increase the time it takes to press. A lot of factors can affect the print quality such as humidity and room temperature. This can effect the print heads that can eventually get clogged up.

    • DTG is a great option for businesses that want to create high-quality, full-color t-shirts. However, it is also the most expensive printing method.

  • Direct Transfer Film (DTF)

    • Good for: Large runs, expanded product options (you can sell transfers and t-shirts), full color, you can do one-offs. Ink and film are fairly cheap to source.
    • Maintenance can vary depending on the printer, but will still be required.
    • Humidity and room temperature can affect the DTF print heads. DTF printing in a non-properly ventilated area can cause health issues. Powder curing needs to be taken into consideration.
    • For small runs, you might be able to get away with curing in a heat press or a small curing station. Larger runs will require a shaker
    • DTF startup costs can be more than just the printer itself. Ink, film, curing, and ventilation all need to be factored in, which can significantly increase the price tag.
    • We recommend the Uninet 100 DTF Printer

  • T-Shirt Transfers

Instead of buying a printer, consider buying pre-made transfers for smaller runs or as a starting point. Here are some transfer options to consider:

  • DTF Transfers: Perfect for small runs and testing designs or making samples.
  • Screen Printed Transfers: Can be single or multi-color, or full color. Ideal for larger runs (more than 10-15 shirts).
  • Transfers are a great option for businesses that want to offer a wider variety of designs or cater to bulk orders.
  • Screen Printing

Screen printing is primarily used for larger runs or bulk orders. It is not suitable for small one-off prints because the setup time is too long.

Smaller Runs vs. Larger Runs

How many shirts constitute a "smaller run" or a "larger run" depends on your business and workflow. A good rule of thumb is to consider 15 shirts as the point where you might transition from using methods like HTV or white toner to transfers.

  • Heat Press

Regardless of the printing method you choose (except screen printing), you will need a heat press to apply your designs to t-shirts.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a heat press:

* **Brands:** There are many different heat press brands on the market. Some popular options include Cricut EasyPress, Stahls' Hotronix Heat Press, and Geo Knight Heat Press.
* **Sizing:** The size of the heat press platen (the heated surface) will determine the size of the designs you can create. A minimum size of 15" x 15" is recommended.
* **Multiple Presses & Longer Job Times:** If you plan on doing larger runs, you may want to consider investing in multiple heat presses to increase your production speed.

Start Selling

Once you have chosen a printing method and heat press, you are ready to start selling your t-shirts! Here are a few popular options:

  • Shopify [affiliate link placement for Shopify]: Shopify is a great platform for creating an online store to sell your custom t-shirts or your own branded shirts. It's easy to use and has a wide variety of apps to help you manage your store and marketing. They even have apps that allow customers to upload their own designs for custom work!

Designing Your T-Shirts

There are a few different software programs that you can use to create your t-shirt designs. The best program for you will depend on your design skills and budget.

Here are a few popular options:

  • Adobe Photoshop [Paid software]: This is a powerful program that can be used to create complex, full-color designs. However, it has a steep learning curve.
  • Inkscape [Free, open-source software]: This is a free program that is great for creating simple, vector-based designs. Vector designs can be scaled to any size without losing quality, which is important for t-shirt printing.
  • Kittl [Paid software with discount link]: Kittl is an AI-powered design tool that can be used to create both full-color and vector-based designs. It also has a library of pre-made designs and templates that you can use to get started. You can get a discount on Kittl with this link [insert discount link here].
  • Etsy [Online marketplace]: Etsy is a great place to find pre-made t-shirt designs and templates. You can also find freelance designers on Etsy who can create custom designs for you.

Pricing Your T-Shirts

There are a few different ways to price your t-shirts. A popular option is to double the amount you pay for all of your materials (including the blank t-shirt, ink, transfers, etc.). You can also use a t-shirt pricing calculator to help you determine the best price for your shirts.

Marketing Your T-Shirt Business

Here, we'll explore marketing strategies for both custom t-shirt businesses and those selling their own branded shirts:

Marketing for Custom T-Shirt Businesses:

  • Local is Key:

    • Facebook Marketplace: While some may think it's a bygone platform, Facebook Marketplace can still be a goldmine for local customers seeking custom shirts. Utilize targeted ads and high-quality photos to showcase your work.
    • Local Facebook Groups: Join community groups related to your area's schools, sports teams, businesses, and hobbies. Offer deals and post examples of your custom work relevant to the group.
    • Local Apps: Consider promoting your services on neighborhood apps like Nextdoor, Ring, and 5miles. Highlight your ability to create custom designs for events, birthdays, and other local needs.
    • Cold Calling (or Messaging): Reach out to local businesses (think restaurants, gyms) and offer custom-branded t-shirts for their staff or promotional events. You can also try cold messaging local businesses through social media direct messages (DMs). Here's an example DM script:

"Hi [Business Name], I noticed your awesome team! I run a local custom t-shirt business and create high-quality shirts for businesses like yours. We can design shirts for your staff, promotional events, or giveaways. Would you be interested in a free quote?"

  • Free Samples & Networking:

    • Offer free samples (a single custom t-shirt) to local businesses in exchange for a testimonial or social media shoutout.
    • Network with other small businesses who might be interested in offering custom t-shirts to their customers. Partner with them for joint promotions or bundled services.
    • Create a Google My Business listing to increase local visibility and allow customers to leave reviews.
  • Word-of-Mouth Marketing: This is powerful! Provide excellent customer service and high-quality products to turn satisfied customers into brand advocates.

  • Contact Friends & Businesses: Let your network know you're offering custom t-shirt printing! Your friends with businesses might need shirts for their employees or events.

Marketing for Your Own Branded T-Shirt Business:

  • Social Media Marketing:

    • Facebook Ads: Utilize targeted Facebook Ads to reach potential customers based on demographics and interests. Showcase your unique designs and brand story through compelling visuals and ad copy.
    • Organic Social Media Growth: Build a strong presence on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Utilize high-quality photos and engaging content (e.g., behind-the-scenes glimpses, funny skits related to your brand). Partner with micro-influencers in your niche to promote your shirts to their audience.
    • Reels & TikTok: These short-form video formats are booming! Create engaging videos showcasing your shirt designs being worn, the printing process, or fun lifestyle content.
  • Website Optimization: Ensure your website is user-friendly and optimized for search engines (SEO). Use relevant keywords throughout your product descriptions and website copy to improve organic search ranking.

  • Influencer Marketing: Partner with influencers whose audience aligns with your brand to increase brand awareness and drive sales. Focus on micro-influencers (those with 10,000-50,000 followers) who often have higher engagement rates than mega-influencers.

  • Paid Advertising: Consider paid advertising on platforms like Google Ads to reach potential customers who are actively searching for t-shirts or related keywords.

  • Ecommerce Marketing Tools: Utilize email marketing and abandoned cart recovery tools to nurture leads and convert website visitors into paying customers.

Additional Tips:

  • Run Sales & Promotions: Offer limited-time discounts and promotions to generate excitement and encourage customers to purchase.
  • Offer Excellent Customer Service: Respond promptly to inquiries, be helpful and professional, and go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. Positive customer experiences will lead to repeat business and positive word-of-mouth marketing.
  • Track Your Results: Monitor the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns and adjust your strategies accordingly. Use website analytics tools to track traffic sources, conversion rates, and customer behavior.

By implementing these marketing strategies, you can effectively reach your target audience, grow your t-shirt printing business, and turn your creative passion into a profitable venture.
